Directing is leadership in its most visible form. You hold a creative vision, lead a crew and a cast of collaborators, answer to producers and networks, and deliver on time and on budget.

Then you do it all again on the next project. Coaching helps you lead with intention, protect your creative voice and look after the person doing the work.

Challenges
What you are up against

The challenges

Vision and constraints

Protecting the creative idea while working inside budgets, notes and schedules.

Big, temporary teams

Building trust fast with crews and collaborators who may only be together for weeks.

Project to project

The stop and start rhythm makes it hard to plan a career, let alone a life.

Notes and pressure

Feedback from producers, executives and audiences can be loud. Staying grounded in your own judgment takes practice.

How coaching helps

Where we focus

Coaching is not advice from the sidelines. I ask the questions that help you see your situation clearly, then we turn what you find into action. Here is where my work with clients like you often goes.

  • Your creative direction. Get clear on your voice and the kind of work you want to make next.
  • Vision people follow. Communicate what you see so your team understands it and buys in.
  • Notes without the sting. Handle feedback and conflict with less stress and more curiosity.
  • The arc of your career. Use the time between projects to plan, not just recover.
  • Sustainable creativity. Build routines that protect your energy and your health through intense production schedules.

How it works

Working together

1

30 minute consultation

We get to know each other and decide together whether we are the right fit.

2

Agreements

We sign a simple agreement that sets out how we work, what to expect and payment.

3

Background

You fill out a short form about where you are now and what you want from coaching.

4

Assessments

If you have DiSC or 360 results, we review them together. I can also run these assessments for you.

5

Regular sessions

We meet on Zoom for 45 to 60 minutes. I suggest two sessions a month, but the rhythm is up to you.

6

Check-ins and iteration

After sessions you get follow-up questions, observations and learning ideas. We revisit progress and adjust as you grow.

Most engagements run four to six months and evolve with your needs. I follow the standards of the International Coaching Federation. Sessions can flex around production schedules, including prep, shoot and post.

About

Why Craig

I have spent three decades on what I call the Artist's Path, wearing many hats across music and media. My media clients have included Disney, ESPN, ABC, Sony, the NFL, CBS and Warner Bros., so I understand the pace and pressure of the work.

As a songwriter and performer I know what it feels like to protect a creative idea under commercial pressure. As an ICF-certified coach at the ACC level, trained through Coaching 4 Today, I help you lead the people around that idea.
